Good News? During a Recession! PDF Print E-mail

Okay, I know I'm all about the good news here, but I have to talk a bit about this recession.  All over the news, water cooler, blogs and talk radio, people are focused on how bad things are getting and how much they don't have anymore.  And to be honest with you, a focus on what you don't have, and how bad things could get, well, that's not likely to pull you through.  Basically, I'm here to say that you can ride this recession with a smile.  Yes, a smile.  And here's how.

In my hears as a psychologist I've had the opportunity to see a lot of people work through more struggles and trauma than you can imagine.
From major depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and overcoming a range of addictions, I've witnessed a wealth of discovery and growth in the lives a children and their families.  The lessons they've learned, I've learned as well and as a result I'm able to share those lessons with you.

The main lesson of all, and the one that can help you ride this recession with a smile is that to overcome any crisis or dilemma one must always "do."  One must always "act."  And one must always "believe."  In other words, I've yet to have a client say to me, "Dr. Cole, I was so depressed and then one day while sitting on the couch, I just felt better.", Or better yet, I've never heard anyone say, "Yes, Dr. Cole, after three months of drug addiction, I decided to lock myself in my house and then all of a sudden I felt better."  It's never happened, and I doubt it ever will.

To the contrary, every single instance of emotional growth and recovery has involved, som action, some drive and some "doing".  One must get up off the couch, open the door to their house and step out in to the world, before any change can happen.  And with the economy wallowing in the muck and mire of a recession, one could be compelled to simply flop on the proverbial couch and say, "Yep, food prices are high, home values have dropped and well, I might as well sit on the couch and read more bad news."  If one elects to do that, well we know what happens next, nothing.  Sitting, moping, and depressively basking in the recession will do absolutely nothing.

Riding the recession with a smile means to stare it in the face while one is up on their feet, challenging themselves to find ways to succeed.   For you to make it through these times there must be an unrelenting and everpresent emphasis on the good news and the potential that you bring to the table.  This is the energy, and the drive that multiplied by millions of people will foster a new sense of hope, optimism and resilience.  Will it be easy? Doubtful.  Will it be done?  Absolutely yes!  So, get up, take action and initiate the pursuit of, creation and ongoing embrace of the good news in our world.  Do this each and every day and you'll see the recession's impact on your psyche shrink, while your infectious optimism and outcome grows, and grows, and grows.

Yes.  You are good news!
